WHAT DO I SAY WHEN THEY ASK, "HOW DID YOU DO THAT?"

We live in a world exploding with mind-bending new technologies. And very few of us are able to explain in detail, the art and science behind these wonders. But I hardly ever hear someone ask, "How does that work?"...unless I've just performed a simple magic trick!

I try my best to present my magic, as something more than just 'puzzles to be figured out.' But when people inevitably ask, "How did you do that?" here are a few replies I've given over the years...

#1:"I have a few theories, but I'm still not sure." (Or, "I was hoping you could tell ME.") I really like the humility of this playful reply, but some people DO find it a bit annoying.

#2:"I didn't do it. Your mind did." It's honest and accurate, but it tends to just inspire more questions.

#3:"If I told you I'd have to kill you." As hack as it is, this reply almost always gets a good laugh from people. And it's a fun way to let people know, you have NO intention of telling them how you did it.

#4:" It's a secret." This is one of my personal favorites, because I can deliver it in a great many ways.

Like many younger performers, when I first started exploring the art of magic, I was very focused on the 'secret methods.' But in the past couple of decades, I'm far more interested in the presentation and psychology of my performances. And I've discovered that, the less I focus on the 'secrets' of my tricks, the less other people ask, "How did you do that?"

Another marvelous indication of just how much our audiences are willing to follow our lead. Let's lead them somewhere interesting!

A RECENT Kids Magic Show 'BREAKTHROUGH' by MagicMan HongWei On 11 April

Last week I was hired to entertain people at a 1 year old kid's birthday party happening in an elegant condominium's event hall in Singapore's Yishun Ave 6 Lilydale.

 Instead of 'Rushin to work' the moment I arrived. I arrived a half an hour earlier, and while drinking 1 packet of  yogurt  I truly just 'hung out.' I really felt like I was just another guest at the party.

During the magic and mentalism effects, I would open things up for other small things to happen.

After 20 mins I started performing, I started with a few opening effects to Break The Ice  in the atmosphere such as Appearing And Vanishing Lights and Appearin flowers from my bare hands...

I heard response from a cute little boy saying that "Wow !! he's eating FIRE!!"(although Its light)

Little moments like this sparkle imagination( THATS a magicians best friend!!!!)

I purposely gave my performance a "BREAKING POINT". By telling the audience I am thirsty and I need a extra LARGE "drink".  Unfortunately I could not drank it as the STRAW I had was TOO SMALL for a extra LARGE "drink".  So I tried to improvise by APPEARING an 8 foot Straw.

All the audience was shocked.

I also performed many other comedy routine such as TORN paper to Bouquets....  And some cool card Miracles that involved the audience. 

When I made some mistakes at some point I improvised by turning it into a comedy splinting wands routine. And that left my audience to have as sense of WONDER and Amazement.....

AFTER the FUN and Comedy Magic Show I proceeded to 30 minutes of balloon sculpting.  The Balloons were quite well Receive. A cute boy asked me to make different balloons for several times.

I felt very blessed and excited that Evening .......

More than ever, I really focused on being relaxed and helping people FEEL GOOD. And the magic tricks, well, they were just one of my modes of "transport" to make that happen.

P.S. :After performance the host told me that my magical skills is very impressive ;)

Birthday/Countdown 2015 COMEDY Stage Magic by MagicMan HongWei 

Recently I was being hired by one of my Client Uncle Jolly  to perform for his Birthday/Countdown Party at Singapore Thomson Community Club Stage Magic on the 31st December 2014 . It was a fun time performing miracles for them. We enjoyed our time very much as we have a lot of fun, laughter, and excitement.

And instead of 'getting right to work' the moment I arrived as I usually do, I arrived a little early, and while sipping (half!) a glass of chinese tea I truly just 'hung out.' I chatted with people, have some light snacks, and really felt like I was just another guest at the party.

I gave myself more permission than usual, just to follow conversations away from my unusual skills, and towards whatever people really felt like chatting about. Even during the magic and mentalism effects, I would open things up for other small MIRACLES to happen....

 I found myself digging deep into my repertoire and really mixing-up my sets. And the variety warded off that all too familiar feeling of a 'walking through a routine.'

All I can say is no two performers perform the same way..... People will NOT remember me by the trick (cos its like a puzzle). They will remember me by my unique connection/presentation to audience. That is REAL MAGIC....

Many people always ask me other than performing magic what do I love to do.
And I always answer other than magic I also like to create animation clips, collecting stamps, selling items on ebay, having culinary skills, and folding animal balloons.

So what are animations?

Animation is the process of creating a continuous motion and shape change illusion by means of the rapid display of a sequence of static images that minimally differ from each other. The illusion—as in motion pictures in general. The most basic yet effective animations are stop-motion animation.

This stop-motion animation reminds me of one the many animations I have did. And that was also the first time I had learnt about animation in my life. I directed the animation as I am the team leader. It was done with a team of classmates for NEmation competition. Although we didn't won, I had a fruitful experience.

My journey on learning culinary skills...........

When I was younger, every time I've been served a plate/bowl of delicious food. I will ask myself, "How is this made possible?" After quite a long time I've figured out that this is made possible by the chef culinary.
That is why I fall in love with the practical lessons of Food And Nutrition during my secondary school years.
And I always believed that with simple ingredients, you can create something amazing!!

Recently I was being invited by Toa Payoh Zone 6 RC to perform a Chinese New Year(CNY) themed Stage Magic. It was a fun time performing miracles for them. We enjoyed our time very much.

I arrived a little early, and while sipping (half!) a glass of Chinese tea I truly just 'hung out.' I chatted with people,  and really felt like I was just another guest at the party.

I gave myself more permission than usual, just to follow conversations away from my unusual skills, and towards whatever people really felt like chatting about. Even during the magic and mentalism effects, I would open things up for other small MIRACLES to happen....

 I found myself digging deep into my repertoire and really mixing-up my sets. And the variety warded off that all too familiar feeling of a 'walking through a routine.' I also found myself feeing a little nervous... Which I will definitely work on it and improve.... ;) lols
